Install Filter-Only Connect app on a School Managed iOS Device

Install Filter-Only Connect app

If you want to use Family Zone on your child’s iOS school device, but their school uses Mobile Device Management (MDM), you'll need to install a special version of Family Zone Connect called in Filter-Only mode. Filter-Only mode allows you to see reports about your child’s online activity outside of School.

There are five steps to installing the Family Zone Connect app in Filter-Only mode

  1. Link a Child to a Family Zone School
  2. Download and install the Connect app
  3. Grant the Connect app notifications and location permissions on the iPhone or iPad
  4. Grant VPN permissions to the iPhone or iPad
  5. Confirm iCloud Private Relay is turned off

Link your Child to a Family Zone School

On your phone or tablet:

  1. Open a web browser, go to https://portal.familyzone.com
  2. Sign in with your Parent email and password
  3. In Users > Family, tap the right arrow to find your child’s name
  4. Tap their name
  5. Tap Settings
  6. Go down to SCHOOLS
  7. In Select a school, enter the name of your child’s School

Note: If your child’s school is not listed, please contact Family Zone Support to have the school added to the school listing.

  1. Tap on the School’s name
  2. Tap ADD SCHOOL

You can close the web browser.


Download and Install 

On your child's iPhone or iPad:


  1. In the App Store, install and open Family Zone Connect
  2. Tap I already have an account  
  3. Sign in with your Parent email and password 
  4. Tap CHILD at Who will be using this device?  
  5. Tap on your child's name   
  6. At Select installation type, tap FILTER ONLY 

 

Grant Notifications and Location Permissions

You must enable the Notification and Location permissions on your child's iOS device for the Connect app to send notifications and monitor the location of your child's iPhone or iPad.

On your child's iPhone or iPad:


  1. At Notifications, tap ALLOW
  2. At the Connect App would like to send you notifications 
    Tap Allow 
  3. At Device location, tap ALLOW
  4. At Allow Connect App to use your location 
    Tap Allow While Using App 
  5. At ... also use your location when you are not using the app? 
    Tap Change to Always Allow 

Schools do not share location information. 

Device locations are not available for School owned Devices. Additionally, location information is not tracked during the time a personal phone or tablet is connected to a School's network.


Grant VPN Permissions

You must enable VPN permission for the Connect app to monitor online material on your child's iPhone or iPad.

On your child's iPhone or iPad:

  1. At VPN, tap ALLOW
  2. At the ... Add VPN Configurations confirmation, tap Allow 
  3. Enter the 6 digit passcode for this phone
  4. At Location, tap ALLOW 
  5. When you see your child's name, restart the iOS device and return it to your child

Additional Step for iOS 15 iCloud Private Relay Users

If your family has a paid subscription to iCloud, you will also need to ensure that iCloud Private Relay is turned off. The iCloud Private Relay prevents monitoring of web content on your child's iPhone or iPad.

On your child's iPhone or iPad:

  1. In the iOS Settings, tap on your Child's Apple ID 
  2. Tap iCloud 
  3. Go down and tap Private Relay 
  4. Ensure the slider is off (gray)
    Tap the < left arrow at the top of the screen to back out of the iOS Settings
    Restart your Child's iOS Device

Troubleshoot Filter-Only Connect app install

No Filter-Only installation type displays

If you don’t receive a FILTER ONLY installation option when installing the Connect app, your child may not have been linked to a Family Zone School. Follow the Link Child to a Family Zone School steps, then Download and Install the Family Zone Connect app again.

MDM payload does not match the old payload error message displays

When installing the Connect app, you may receive a “Profile Installation Failed - The new MDM payload does not match the old payload” error message. 

Check your child’s device for an existing MDM profile:

  1. Go to Settings > General
  2. Move down and tap VPN and Device Management
  3. Note the name of the MDM provider, it may be your Child’s School name or website domain
  4. Try to install the Filter-Only Connect app again, ensuring to complete the Link a Child to a Family Zone School step

Note: If the MDM provider is Family Zone, attempt to remove the MDM profile and try a Filter-Only install again:

  1. Move down and tap Leave Remote Management
  2. Tap Erase
  3. Try to install the Filter-Only Connect app again
